I worked my first day of subbing today and I am sooooooooooo tired! It wasn´t even a full day, as they also have staff development early dismissals on Wednesdays as we do back home. Shows how lazy I´ve been during the past 6 months.
I subbed for a 5th grade class. All of the classes K-3 have teacher aides and when the teacher is absent, they are allowed to teach the class, so that only leaves grades 4 and 5 who would need substitutes. That´s why I haven´t worked until now. When they called, I was excited, but then I got very nervous because I haven´t been in a classroom since October, and the last time was a nightmare!
The secretary told me to arrive by 7:30--the kids arrive at the classroom at 8. Since it was my first time, I wanted to arrive before that, just to have time to make sure I understood the plans and whatnot. I arrived at the school at 7 am after taking a combi and walking several blocks, and I was the only person there! (Some things never change.) I sat in the elementary office until 7:15 when teachers slowly started rolling in, but still no secretary. 7:30...7:35...7:40...7:45...still no secretary! Finally, I stood up and asked another person behind the desk (I think she was a teacher) what to do. She showed me where to sign in, gave me the keys to the classroom, and showed me where to go. I arrived in the room only 10 minutes before the kids showed up--thank goodness it was an easy day! The kids were so nice, very quiet, and they had two specialists. We even went to the computer lab--it was full of flat screen iMacs and color printers! It was such a nice experience!
After school ended, I had to go to the accounting offices, which were at the farthest end of the school as possible! They took a lot of personal information, took my picture, and set up a bank account for my pay to be put into.
By the time I made it home, I was exhausted! I took a quick nap (because I had to go back out for tutoring in a few hours) and when I woke up, Pedro said that my phone had been ringing. When I listened to my voice mail, it was Roosevelt for another sub job for tomorrow! Hopefully, it will just be another half day because I do not know if I can handle a full day yet. (I know, so pathetic, but you try working again after doing nothing for 6 months!)
**On a side note, Pedro is taking three weeks of vacation this month and after staying at home all day, while I was out working, he told me that he knows how I feel staying in the house all day, being bored.
